Pondicherry

About 162 km away from Madras is the Union Territory of Pondichery.

It can be reached in three and half hours via East Coast Road., where you play hide and seek with the Bay of Bengal.

However another route is also there.



In a nut shell, Pondichery can be described as a seaside town that blend Spiritually ,French connection and heritage,Tamil culture along with the almost Hare Rama Hare Saga - the hippies.All in one


All road at Pondichery lead to the beach which is just opposite the Secretariat on Goubert Avenue.The Gandhi Memorial,French war memorial are near by. So is the world famous Aurobindo Ashram.



Auroville International town whic is designed as CITY OF DAWN  is 10 km away from here.Famous for 95 feet high Gold plated Matri Mandir.It is a tourist pace cum Meditation center for the inmates and members.


Pondichery is also the Transist center those proceeding to or coming from Thanjaur,Chadambaram and Mahabalipuram.


At Mahabalipuram , the shore temple overlooking the Bay of Bengal ,is the lone survivor of seven granite temples said to be built during 8th century  and is a World Heritage Site.it is one of the oldest rock-cut temples of Soth India.


The famous shrine of Sri Manakula Vinayakar in the heart of the town is also located near the Aurobindo Ashram.It is 300 years old temple dedicated to Hindu God Sri Ganesha.


Pondicherry has a unique history that dates back to the Roman Empire era.Cultural ties between Pondichery and the French continue.it boasts of a divers culture both French,Tamil and Indian as a whole.


there is a stamp of a french connection all over the town looking through the Majestic buildings and infrastructure  designed in French styles.


One who decides  for a Pondychery vacation  ........in turn does himself a favor for life.

Apart from theser,the Union Territory also consists of 3 other  ....... .Mahe,Yanaam and Karaikel.


One of them is Karaikel which is 132 km away from here via world famous Temple town of Chidambaram and Sirkali town.


Poet Subramainiam Bharathiar 's songs were composed here .The house were he used to live has been converted into a Museum.


Karaikel is also famous for the shrine of Lord Saturn at Thirunallar.A larged number of people come here from all over the country.


Karaikel is just few km away from the Nagaor Dargaha  of the Muslim community.

And,similarly ,the famous christian shrine at Vaillankinni is about some 40 km away from Karaikel via Nagapattnam,a sea port,

the news is that the Auroville Matri Mandir  which was under construction since the development of the township began 28.2 1968 has been completed , some times way back.

Auroville has grown into an expanding community consisting of over 2000 people from India and 35 other countries.

The residents,apart from being volunteers at the Matri Mandir,are engaged in a wide range of activities including research , organic farming,village development , handicrafts and cross cultural communications.

in fact,it has since long become a symbol of human unity.

Atmosphere here at Matri Mandir and at the Aurobindo Ashram is so effective on human minds that it compels us to re-visit again and again !

For those who seek relief from stress, hectic life styles or prone to depressions ,this place is heaven.

AUROBINDO ASHRAM, founded during the first decade of 19th century is an ideal center for those aspiring for spiritual consciousness.

those visiting Pondychery never fail to stop at the Ashram which is an International Tourist center.

Aurobindo Ghosh was born on August 15 1872 in Calcutta..Practiced yoga from 1904 onward was also very active in politics and in Indian freedom struggle.however, in 1910 he retired from active politics and moved to Pondychery to devote himself fully for spiritual experiments.

soon his followers grew in numbers and at a later stage he was joined by  Mother,Mirra Alfassa. She came to Pondychery in 1914.Born on Feb 21 1878,she came to India in search of Spiritual learning and she recognized Aurobindo as her teacher.Gradually,she became the most important Part   of Aurobindo's life.



Aurobindo left for heavenly abode on 5th DEC 1950 while Mother on 7th November 1973.


Samadhi's of both Aurobindo and Mother  is at the AUROBINDO ASHRAM and which is center of  millions of people around the Globe who seek spiritual relief.



And a visit to this placer makes wonders for many such lonely hearts who sought solace from failures and bitterness in life.One can say this by just observing the flow of tourists.Such a soothing atmosphere is Not found anywhere in the country.



The way,the Aurobindo Ashram is being run ,managed and works is like a eye opener for others NGO to follow the path.


The Ashram provides its member with everything they need for a descent and healthy life.


Common Kitchen caters to about 4000 people daily. Vegetables and fruits are grown in house farms.


Artistic and cultural activities which are a Must in every Bengali household , is given  an adequate prominence in spite  of the fact that a large numbers of the inmates and visitors are Foreigners.


Art gallery,theater.Library and  The International Center of Education which was started in 1952  all these are for better meant of members and visitors .


The Ashram attracts people not only from different parts of the country but around the Globe.


It does not observe any specific creed and thus it is one of the popular most tourist place in India which is thronged by both young and old.



And ,lastly, it is the Magnificent Auroville ,the International township ,sponsored by Aurobindo Society . It was inaugurated on 28th feb 1968 and over this 47 plus years has come up in a sparkling atmosphere at Pondychery.Over 1800 people from India and 35 other country has been living here. in 1988 a Auroville Foundation act was passed by our  Parliament with a view to make long term arrangement of Auroville .
